Design Principles - Task 4

10 Things You Need To Know About Graphic Design

For this task we were required to come up with 5 basic principles of Graphic Design based on the content of our previous lectures and workshops.

1. Typography determines the way in which a body of text is read/received.

2. In cases concerning colour, less is almost always more.

3. Effective execution of colour use depends on the designers understanding of colour theory.

4. Type and image depend and rely on the execution of the other.

5. A thoroughly thought out and appropriate grid is what determines a good layout.

6. Body copy is the area that a reader spends most time on, it needs to be comfortable and easy to read. The type in body copy isn't required to be imaginatively designed, it is required to be readable and legible.

7. There is a big difference between legibility and readability but they both have very high levels of importance.

8. Semiotics is a universal language, understood worldwide and it's importance in Graphic Design should never be underestimated.

9. To be taken seriously in the world of design it is vital to understand the difference between a typeface and a font.

10. There are several elements that can determine hierarchy on a design, from font to layout to size, and an understanding of how it will be received is vital for this.
